So this whole thing is a little late...had a crazy month, coinciding with a weekend jaunt up to New Hampshire...but here I am once again. Hopefully I will get a little more regular with this...

If there was a band who I felt close to when I was in my band, it would be Beltaine. They came and watched our practice, we watched them practice, I did an interview with them for a zine that I had worked on, but never got out. (Seems a lot like a lot of the projects that I've worked on...I start and never finish, good intentions and all) They seemed to be the next step for everything I couldn't do. They had a little more talent, luck, and drive than I.

Their genesis came at a time when I was becoming fairly involved in the hardcore scene in Rhode Island. Beltaine were a group of people with diverse tastes and ideas and somehow they brought it all together. There's definitely a Split Lip feel in the music, in that you know it started somewhere in hardcore, but mixed in far too much melody and interesting bits. I've always been reminded of Sunny Day Real Estate when thinking of the vocals, however, looking back on it, I don't see that at all. Maybe Lifetime mixed with Sunny Day? Ha, well you be the judge.

Beltaine released a seven inch on Watermark Records and a seven inch and a full length on Atomic Action. I lost touch with them after the seven inch on Watermark, and sometime they started playing together as Wokenbywire.

The Sky Just Opens Wide...

I had started out this post with a long winded recollection of my memories of this band intertwined with their history. When I realized that it was getting incredibly long, and way past the point, I decided I’d keep it short: Sense Field started in 1990 from the ashes of Reason To Believe. (I will most likely do a post on them in the future.) They play music. I would call it hardcore/punk influenced indie rock. They put out 5 albums and had countless songs on compilations, and an unreleased album (that had three versions) that was morphed into 2001’s Tonight & Forever. That record spawned a minor hit with ‘Save Yourself’ on the Roswell soundtrack, but not a peep on the airwaves after that. After much turmoil, pain, suffering, and minor success Sense Field finally called it quits just after New Year’s Day 2004. From there the members went onto many different projects. For one album vocalist Jon Bunch joined Further Seems Forever), until they broke up. Chris Evenson started Belasana with Bret Detar from the Juliana Theory. Rodney Sellars continued to work on his artwork and started The Year Zero, which has morphed from a full band (soundwise anyway) towards a more shoegaze/dreampop sound consisting of himself and a singer. Scott MacPherson is currently drumming for Solea.

Picking out a few songs for sampling was difficult, simply because I’d be surprised if no one had heard of them. So instead I decided to go with some rarities.

Fitting that my first post should be at work (after having Camino screw me over twice in trying to type my first post last night), and having it be Billy Bragg. Since I'm playing on worker's time.

Anyway, White Man In Hammersmith Palais was taken from the Joe Strummer Tribute on 2-22-2003. I've always enjoyed the bits I've heard from Billy Bragg, and I am a huge Clash/Joe Strummer fan, so enjoy that here.

Anyway, on this blog I plan on presented my past and present in music and musical loves which range from hardcore to post hardcore to indie and blue and back around to shoegaze and synthy stuff. I plan to try and recollect my past and find my future and all that. I'm going for an update weekly, probably middle of the week, but I'm not going to make any promises. mp3's will stay up for two weeks most likely, until I get some more hosting.
